Live a Life of No Fakes
Let Your Greatness Shine – Give Your Gift to the World
One beautiful Saturday morning Elaine goes shopping looking for a perfect gift for her niece.
She comes across to almost all the shops inside the mall looking for that one perfect gift. It’s her favorite niece’s 7th birthday. After almost half-day search, finally she saw what she’s looking for.
“This is perfect for her”. She said smiling holding an exquisitely made ionized Goody hairbrush. “I’m sure she’ll love this. She’s a young lady now and this will be useful”.
She bought it, got it beautifully gift wrapped and gave it to her niece.
Twenty years fast forward her niece is getting married. After receiving the wedding invitation, Elaine visited her niece.
“Can I do your make-up on your wedding day?”
“Sure Aunt Elaine. I would love to.”
The wedding day comes.
Few hours before the tying of the knot, Elaine got her make-up kit ready and started putting make-up on her favorite niece’s beautiful face.
“It’s itching. My back is itching!” She exclaimed. “Aunt Elaine can you please hand me the brush, I want to scratch my back.”
“Where? What brush?”
“There.” Pointing to the exquisitely made ionized Goody hairbrush she gave to her 20 years ago.
Scratch. Scratch. Scratch. For 20 years she uses hairbrush as a wonderful back scratcher.
Friends, many people are like Elaine’s niece. Because they are not using their gifts well, they are not fulfilling their life’s purpose. Their greatness doesn’t shine.
Here’s my big message for today, be true to yourself. Stop trying to be someone else. Be who you really are. Do what you wanted to do. Be who you wanted to be.
Why Do We Try To Be Someone Else
Have you heard Avril Lavigne’s song “Complicated”? It’s 100% true: when you try to become someone else you’re making your life complicated. But why do we make our life complicated? Why do we want to be someone else? Two words: people compare.
People compare. We compare. Have you heard these lines from your parents?
“Why can’t you be like your elder sister? She’s good at school look at you all you do is play badminton. I’m sick of you!”
“Why can’t you be like your cousin, he is athletic than you are. Look at you all you do is to read your books and surf the internet!”
Or, have you heard these lines from your spouse, your boyfriend or your girlfriend?
“Why can’t you be like Angel Aquino? She’s old but it seems she doesn’t aged at all. She looks younger than her age.”
“Why can’t you earn just how much Manny Pacquiao is earning? How will I make ends meet with this money? I’m tired of this!”
“Why don’t you wear more fashionable clothes? Aren’t you tired of wearing plain white blouse and ordinary jeans? You can be more beautiful.” (I’m guilty of this. There is a time when I want Shiela to wear more fashionable clothes. It’s good thing I have overcome it. I now appreciate Shiela for being just the wonderful way she is).
Or, have you heard these lines from you? Yes, most of the time you compare yourself.
“Why I can’t be like Rico Blanco? I have good looks, I can sing, I can also play both the keyboards and the guitar. I should be like him.”
“My mom would be happy if I’ll just throw my badminton racket and be like my sister.”
This is sick. This is toxic. This is really complicated.
If there are people around you like those above, better get rid of them. Don’t listen to them. Because God never looks at you that way, when God looks at you all He sees is your greatness. All He sees is you and who you could be. Because He wanted you to be true to yourself; He wanted you to be who you really are.
Mary and Martha
Have you heard or read the story of Mary and Martha in the Bible? It’s on Luke 10:38-41 . It goes like this:
The Lord and His disciples were traveling along and came to a village. When they got there, a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat down in front of the Lord and was listening to what He said. Martha was worried about all that had to be done. Finally she went to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it bother you that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!”
The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus is not criticizing Martha for being busy. Jesus is correcting Martha for comparing herself to Mary. Imagine if we reverse the story. Let say Mary said,
“Lord doesn’t it bother you that my sister Martha is making a lot of noise in the kitchen? Tell her to come here and join us.”
The Lord will answer,
“Mary, Mary! You are worried and upset about so many things, but only one thing is necessary. Martha has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Friends, if you are a Martha, be a Martha. If you are a Mary, be a Mary. Don’t compare. Don’t try to be someone else. Be who you really are.
Shine Your Light – Only You Has It
Imagine, just imagine that what if the sea doesn’t wanted to be salty. He wanted to be fresh. Do you think the world will be the same? No it won’t. The world will be a lesser place for everyone.
Friends, if you wanted to be someone else or try very hard to be someone else you are making the world a lesser place.
This is what I believe, from the very start God has given you a gift, and it’s a special gift that only you possess. And you don’t have to be someone else to have it. Because God created you, molded you, and made you to become someone special.
From the very start God has a dream for the world that’s why he made you. And it’s only you who can fulfill that dream; no one else can. And I believe that’s your only way to real bliss and fulfillment.
He Said “I Am”
What if Jesus did not instantly know who he was? Or what his gifts were? In the Bible Jesus had to go into the wilderness to find out who he was – that a wilderness experience was as much a part of his shaping and destiny as it is of yours and mine.
In the wilderness, Jesus was given clear choices, each relating to his special gifts. When the devil said, “Worship me and you will own the world,” Jesus said, “No.” The Devil said, “Then satisfy your hunger, and turn these stones into bread.” Again Jesus said, “No”.
“Throw yourself off the pinnacle of the temple and test you power to spring back to eternal life.” Jesus looked Satan in the face and said, “No.” And finally, after forty days of being tested and refined in that desert furnace, a person emerged who was very clear about who he was and what he was called to do.
It’s no coincidence that only after the wilderness experience did Jesus begins to use the words “I am” when describing himself.
In the Old Testament, when the Jews asked God for a self-description, the only answer they received was “I AM that I AM .” The simplicity of this phrase emphasized his power to them. The word I AM therefore reflects all the creative power in the universe.
What is your wilderness experience? Who do you say you are?
Who Are Me
I told you about my wilderness experiences on my “K Preacher Wannabe” blog. But who do I say I am?
I’m God’s accountant and encourager of down-hearted souls.
But wait. Have I told you that I’m a K Preacher Wannabe? Yes I did. That makes me an encourager of down-hearted souls. But on top of that, I’m God’s accountant.
I graduated B.S. Accountancy. Took the exams and passed it. I’m one of God’s Certified Public Accountants. And I love myself being an accountant. But I have a confession to make.
When I was young I wanted to be an engineer or an architect perhaps. I wanted to design and build high rise towers, bridges and express ways. But my parents would have problems with all the drawing paraphernalia like the sets of rulers, different kinds of pen and pencils, etcetera. So half-heartedly I took up accountancy. But unexpectedly I get hooked to it. I enjoyed it. I have learned to love it. Really!
You might asked, “I thought you are talking about being true to yourself. Doing what you wanted to do and being who you really are? What are you talking about now?”
I’m an Accounting Software Engineer
I tell you, I’m being true to myself. I’m doing what I really wanted to do.
My dream of being an engineer hasn’t died at all. I still wanted to be an engineer and I’m pursuing it now, on a different light anyway. Instead of designing and building high rise-towers, bridges and express ways I’m designing accounting information systems.
Yes. I’m may not be licensed but I’m an accounting software engineer .
With two of my friends we started a software company (not a formal company though, but we are going to that). We actually sold an Inventory System. And it feels good! I feel wonderful, happy and fulfilled not because of the sale, partly maybe.
I feel wonderful, happy and fulfilled because I have done what I really wanted to do from the very start.
You Are Made To Be The Greatest You
