Live A Life Of No Fears
Tough Sailing
This is a story about tough sailing, fear, courage and faith.
One evening there were twelve fishermen sailing on a windy lake. Their boat is being tossed around by the waves that made them feel so fearful. Though for quite some time they are with a Master who teaches them about the scriptures, but they were brought up to believe that nature was controlled by the spirits and not by God. They are thinking about drowning, who can save them now.
A little while before morning they saw a man walking on the water towards them. They thought it was a ghost. Seeing a ghost in the winds of chaotic sea made sense to fishermen those days for they believed that the spirits manipulated nature. Now they are not only against the winds and the waves, they are also seeing a ghost. They have been buckling up for a roller-coaster ride and are very scared. They were terrified and started screaming.
Then they heard a voice calling them, “Don’t worry! I am Jesus. Don’t be afraid.” The man walking on the water towards them is Jesus, their Master who’s teaching them about the scriptures. Their Rabbi who once commanded the wind and the waves to calm down and it did. And the twelve fishermen are the disciples. One of them is Peter.
Peter by profession is a fisherman. Thus he must have ridden those same waves before and are used to it. He should have heard the stories and probably has seen some wreckage. He knew the widows. He knew the storm could kill. He knew in times like this you should never get out of the boat unless it’s sinking. As a fisherman, he is very sure that the boat is the safest place in the sea during a storm. But he wanted out.
So when Peter heard Jesus he shouted, “Lord if it is really You, tell me to come to you on the water.”
And when Peter heard Jesus say, “Come on!” he got out of the boat and started walking on the water towards Him.
All Success Are Found Outside Your Comfort Zone
I know many of us are experiencing storms in our life. And most of us are in a boat. Yes we are safe but scared. We feel contented but we complain. We just wanted to stay but we are screaming. We fear.
In his book, “The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die”, John Izzo made an interview with 235 older people ages 59 to 105 and found out that the most common regret people has in his life is that they fear.
It was said in different ways like, “I didn’t take enough risk.”
“I played it too safe.”
“I didn’t try enough.”
Why not take risk? Why play too safe? Why not try? Because we fear and because of that fear we are crippled to take action, we are blinded of the opportunities, we are stuck, caught and trapped.
Dear friends, here’s my big message for you today, “All successes are found outside your Comfort Zone. God doesn’t want you to have regrets in your life. God doesn’t want you to die with your dreams unfulfilled. God is calling you to step-out of your Comfort Zone into your Courage Zone. God doesn’t just give you your dreams He also gave you all the resources you’d ever needed to make those dreams come true. It’s His divine plan for you, to be a success!
You maybe facing a storm right now but I tell you, ‘Never focus on the storm. Focus on your God-given dreams. Because the storm will pull you down sinking but your dreams will push you up walking.’
If you want to walk on water, you’ve got to get out of the boat.”
How Do You Step On Your Courage Zone?
Two steps: (1) define your success and (2) act.
Define Your Success
Imagine one day you woke up and you feel like driving. What you do is you pickup the car key, you get into the car, you start the engine and hit the road. After a long day of driving you feel tired, you sleep and the next morning you start driving again. The next, next morning you drive again. The next, next, next morning you drive again. And again, and again and again, over and over you’re driving. But you are not getting anywhere. It’s tiring. It’s sick. It’s insane.
Now imagine one day you woke up and you feel like going to Bicol. So you pickup the car key, you get into the car armed with a map, you start the engine and hit the road. After a long day of driving you feel tired, you pay yourself a sleep, you are in Batangas now. The next morning you start driving again, you call the day and rest. You’re in Quezon Province. The next morning I’m sure you will be in Bicol. I bet after reaching Bicol you’ll want to go other places.
Lesson: “If you want to go somewhere, know where you’re going.” Here’s my tip (I did this), get a pen and paper and write down what you really, really want for your life. Write it clearly, graphically and deliberately.
Do what I say before you continue reading. Done? Okay go on.
You might want a new job.
You might be dreaming of a brand new car.
You might have just written you wanted your own house.
You might have just written you want to pay all your debts.
You wanted to have all your dreams come true!
Friends I have a revelation for you today: All your dreams are found outside your Comfort Zone. It is all found in your Courage Zone. When you realize that, half of the battle is won.
Step 2: Act. Have A Bias For Action
One day a student asks his master to give him just one important lesson in life. The master smiled and said, “Come back to me tomorrow and I’ll give you ten.”
The following day the student excitedly asks his master what are the ten of the most important lessons in life. The master gave him a list that says…
1. Act.
2. Act again.
3. Act again and again.
4. Act again and again and again.
5. Act again and again and again and again.
6. Act again and again and again and again and again.
7. Act again and again and again and again and again and again.
8. Act again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
9. Act again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
10. Act again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
The list may goes on and on.
Lesson: Take action. Keep moving forward.
God Wants You To Conquer Your Fear
The whole Bible is a story of God calling people out of their Comfort Zones into their Courage Zones.
Abraham was very comfortable in the land of Ur.
He was born there. He played marbles and patentero there. He got married there. All his friends were there. All his memories were there.
But one day, God said, “Migrate to Canaan.”
And boom, off he went to live in a foreign land.
Moses was very comfortable among the Egyptians.
Because he was a prince, he lived in the palace of Pharaoh. He had servants serving him 24 hours a day. His political career was bright and rosy.
But one day, God called him to go into his Courage Zone. He asked him to lead the entire nation of slaves out of Egypt. Through the red sea… through the scorching desert… through the next 40 years! Insane!
Peter was a very comfortable in his fishing boats.
His brother was a fisherman. His father was a fisherman. And his grandfather was a fisherman. Shucks, all his ancestors were fishermen. His life was very peaceful. He saw himself fishing until his retirement.
But one day, God called him to go into his Courage Zone. He asked him to be a fisher of men—and made him the head of the Church.
God is calling you out of your Comfort Zones into your Courage Zones. Listen to him and be very willing to take the first step.
The Pebble That Crushed The Mountain
You must have heard the duel between David and Goliath.
Yes I’m talking about the fling, the stone and the slingshot I bet we all watched it on “Flying House” or “Super Books”. I’m sure you can vividly remember and imagine how David beat Goliath. But do you remember the scene before the battle? Let me remind you, taken from 1 Samuel 17:31-40 (CEV), here goes.
Some soldiers overheard David talking so they told Saul what David has said. Saul sent for David, and David came. “Your Majesty”, he said, “the Philistine shouldn’t turn us into cowards. I’ll go out and fight him myself!”
“You don’t have a chance against him,” Saul replied. “You’re only a boy, and he’s been a soldier all his life.”
But David told him, “Your Majesty, I take care of my father’s sheep. And when one of them is dragged off by a lion or a bear, I go after it and beat the wild animal until it lets the sheep go. If the wild animal turns and attacks me, I grab it by the throat and kill it.
Sir, I have killed lions and bears that way and I can kill this worthless Philistine. He shouldn’t have made fun of the army of the Living God! The Lord has rescued me from the claws of lions and bears, and He will keep me safe from the hands of this Philistine.”
“All right”, Saul answered, “go ahead and fight him. I hope the Lord will help you.”
Saul had his own military clothes and armor put on David, and he gave David a bronze helmet to wear. David strapped on a sword and tried to walk around, but he was not used to wearing those things.
“I can’t move on with all this stuff on”, David said. “I’m just not used to it.”
David took off the armor and picked up his shepherd’s stick. He went out to the stream and picked up five smooth rocks and put them in his leather bag. Then with the sling on his hand, he went straight toward Goliath.
David killed Goliath.
Act Within Your Core Zone
Saul gave David his sword, had his military clothes and armor put on David and lend David his helmet. Yet when David held the sword in his hand, he feels uncomfortable with the armor and the helmet, he knew in his heart it wasn’t the best weapon for him. Because he knew that his core gift wasn’t to wield a sword but to fling a slingshot.
Dear friends, all successes are found on your Courage Zone within your Core Zone.
Let me ask you, “What’s your slingshot? What is your core gift?”
Be Prepared To Fail
Did you notice? When David left to face Goliath he picked up five smooth stones. He didn’t pick one, he picked five.
Why? Because he expected to fail and with each failure, he knew he’d learn how not to throw a stone. He would know how to change the angle, or the speed or the trajectory.
You might make a lot of failures. But that’s ok because in between those failures you’ll learn and between those lessons are promises of success, of real bliss.
Last Big Question
Where do you live?
Do you live in your Comfort Zone or your Courage Zone?
If you want success, you know where you should live.
See you in your Courage Zone.
To God be the glory forever and ever Amen.
