Treasure in Clay Jars

In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again. – 2 Corinthians 4:9

UE CCP – A.REN

During the 2004 University of the East Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants General Assembly (UEJPIA-GA) I was tasked to be an usher. I was wearing then a maroon shirt with navy blue tie, black pants, shiny black shoes and was very handsome (I’m over exaggerating).

A beautiful girl caught my attention. She was wearing a white pin that says, “UE CCP – A.REN.” I get her attention and asked her what’s on her pin.

“UE CCP stands for ‘University of the East Christian Communities Program’ and A.REN stands for ‘Ate Ren.’” She said smiling.

“So you’re ate Ren?”

“Yes. And you are kuya Jobie.” She said staring at my nametag. “Nice meeting you kuya Jobie.”

“Nice meeting you too, ate Ren.” I said smiling. “You know I like your pin, and I would love to have one like that.” I said trying to start a conversation.

“Give me your number and I’ll tell you how.”

I gave her my number. I thought I could chat with her the rest of the afternoon but she said she have to leave because she has a class at 2:30 pm. I waved her goodbye, I never saw her again that day.

That night I received a text message from Ren inviting me to meet her at the Rizal Hall after my class. I met her the next day.

Hello Chaplain’s Office! Hi Erpz!

I met with her that afternoon and we attended half of the 12:15 pm mass. After the mass she pulled me towards an office behind the chapel. The signage reads “University of the East Chaplain’s Office” where she introduced me to Father Bernard Martin whom they call Erpz.

That day changed my life forever.

I become a regular mass attendee. I attend the 12:15 pm mass every afternoon and stayed at the Chaplain’s Office where I met some new friends. Stay a little longer until 3 pm for the 3 o’clock prayer and still meeting some new friends.

I enjoyed their company I forget all about the pin.

One afternoon I came in to the office and no one was there except for the guitar and the song sheets used during the mass. I flip the pages and look for a familiar song. I start playing. I hum, I don’t sing. Little did I know kuya Alexis, one of the mass guitarists, was standing behind.

He pat on my back and commented, “You’re good, why not play the guitar during mass. I’ll ask ate Vebs to teach you the basic mass songs. She’ll do the line-up.”

I play the guitars during 6:45 am mass with ate Vebs.

They Made Me The Music Ministry Leader

One by one the mass guitarists graduated leaving me with ate Vebs. She trained me with the songs and I do my riffs. Mixing and rearranging the songs with my own style, the choir started to like me.

Months before ate Vebs graduates, she asked me to pray about committing for the ministry, which I did. I drop my commitment letter and chose to serve for the music ministry. They made me the music ministry leader. But I still don’t sing.

Committed To Serve

During my fifth year first semester I failed Auditing Problems. After the grades were released I approached our professor not expecting to hear her say, “Should you stayed at the library more often to study than to stay at the Chaplain’s Office playing the guitar. You could have not failed in my class.”

But I have to admit it. Sometimes I stayed at the Chaplain’s Office even when there’s no choir practice. I just play the guitars. I don’t have a guitar at home and Chaplain’s Office is where I could sit down and play with some music.

I thought of quitting. I prayed about it, but decided to continue serving. It isn’t because I lead the music ministry that I failed. I failed because I failed to duplicate myself and delegate some tasks.

During the second semester I tried my very best to duplicate myself to the youngsters at church in playing the guitar during mass. And I believe I was successful doing that. I have also delegated the choosing of the mass songs line-up to the newbie’s which they gladly accepted. But that isn’t easy; it still requires some extra time and effort.

After the second semester, I failed three review subjects: Auditing Review, Practical Accounting 2 Review and Business Law and Taxation Review. I won’t be graduating that May. I broke my mother’s heart.

I enrolled that summer in faith. During summer I still lead the choir, I play for the 12:15 pm mass.

God Is Good, All the Time! All the Time, God Is Good!

God has been good to me; I have passed all my back subjects that summer. I have been qualified for a full scholarship at the Review School of Accountancy. I passed the exams.

Treasure in Clay Jars

We are like clay jars in which the glory of God through Jesus Christ is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us. We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up. In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down we get up again (2 Corinthians 4:7-9).

In times that we are tested by God during our service, we’re often tempted to quit and just leave our faith and service behind. But I believe it’s not that easy to do. Once serving to the Lord is inscribed into your heart and became a habit, it stays. You can hardly live without it.

I may not have the perfect faith the Bible requires. I may have faltered when tempted but I believe the glory of God through Jesus Christ is stored in my heart and it shines when I serve.

I may have been knocked down several times. Been confused of what to do but in the end I still choose to serve and live up my faith. I may have suffered a bit but it’s no way compared to how Jesus suffered for me.

P.S.1

By the way pins are given to UE CCP members who commit to serve for the ministry and did an exceptionally fine job. I may have failed several subjects but I’m a champion on God’s eyes. I was pinned!

P.S.2

Two weeks ago I dropped a connection letter at Pasig Feast. I’ll audition for the Music Ministry. I still won’t sing. My dream is to play for the Kerygma Conference (2010) this year. I’ll tell you about it, promise.

He’s Never Late

“Yet even now I know that God will do anything you ask.” John 11:22, CEV.

Two months ago, our company organized a one-day team building activity for our top distributors and employees at The La Mesa Ecopark in Quezon City. We are expected to be at the park 6 am in time for some briefing and orientation; and some warm-up and stretching. The activity is set to kick-off at 7 am.

Our operations manager and I set to meet at McDonalds Quezon Boulevard at 5:30 am. I’m coming from the Bulacan and she’s from Taguig.

Five Coffee Refills

I woke up 4 am that day to prepare and allotted one hour travel time, I hit the road 4:30 am. I arrived at McDonalds 5:20 am.

I looked around the restaurant and did not find her so I take a table and order a cup of coffee not expecting to wait too long.

After 15 minutes I pull my Bible and start reading. After another 15 minutes (it’s now 6 am) I packed my Bible, pull out John Ortberg’s “If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat”, flip the pages and start reading Chapter 2.

I enjoyed reading I almost forgot why I’m there. I flip the pages smiling, on and on I read. I refer to my Bible for additional text and sip my coffee. Little did I know I have been tested to wait. After five chapters and almost three hours and five coffee refills I packed my things and started heading to La Mesa Eco Park.

We never met that morning.

It’s Worth The Wait

I wonder how the sisters Mary and Martha felt waiting for the Lord to come four days after the death of their brother Lazarus. Martha after hearing Jesus is coming immediately went out to meet him while her sister Mary stayed in the house (John 11:20).

Though heartbroken because of their brother’s death, the sisters never asked the Lord why he was late. Their faith stand firm; they still believe. I love what Martha said to Jesus, “Yet even now I know that God will do anything you ask.”

Yet after the long wait and her disappointment, her faith never falters but rather standout. I believe that’s how to wait with the Lord for the Lord, with patience and confidence. And that if you believe and stand firm on your faith, “God will do anything you ask.” Indeed Lazarus was raised from death.

Let’s us not allow the discomfort of our disappointments to snuff out the fire of our faith. Instead let us tell Jesus we believe in Him – “even now.”

I believe our faith is tested during our waiting time. Be still for the Lord.

Maxwell For Free

“So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks.” – Luke 11:9-10, CEV.

I love reading books, especially good books I bought on sale. But what I enjoy reading most are books that are given to me. Sadly, I only have received one book, an “Elf Everyday Courage Therapy” by Linus Mundy given to me by Father Bernard Martin (Erpz) on Christmas of 2005. Other than that I have received none. Not until…

Free: “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader”

One morning, I greeted Ms. Minda, our executive secretary, a good morning. I then go to her table and was surprised of what I see, a pile of books lined on top of her in-out tray. Ranging from “One Day at a Time” by Francis Kong, a little book called “The Prayer of Jabez”, John Maxwell’s “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork” and other good books I can’t remember. What appealed to me was “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork”.

I picked Maxwell among the stack of books and start flipping the pages. “Do you read Maxwell?” she asked me smiling her sweet morning smile. I said yes. The next morning, she hand me a copy of “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader” by John Maxwell. That was my second Maxwell (the first one I bought on sale at 50% off) and my first “Maxwell for free” experience. I said thank you and she said that I should read it and live it for I’m a future leader myself. I feel very blessed that morning not knowing and definitely not expecting a dejavu.

Free: “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork”

One morning, two days after I had my first “Maxwell for free” experience, I sent an IM (Instant Message) to Ms. Gigi, our training assistant, inquiring about the condition of her son who was brought to the hospital the other day. She told me that her son is suffering a form of asthma. “He got out of the hospital after few medications”, she said ironically smiling. I offered to say prayers for the quick recovery of her son which she greatly appreciates.

Before we left the office that day, she saw me handling my copy of “The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader”; she asked me if I read books, I said, ‘yes”. “I see your reading Maxwell”, she said pointing at the book, “Do you have a copy of ‘The 17 indisputable Laws of Teamwork’?”

“I wish I have”, I said smiling,

“If I give you a copy would you read it?”

“Yes.”

The next morning she hand me a copy of “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork”. She said it’s a complementary copy from the company. And since she can’t find time to read it, she decided to give it to me. “The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork”, got it for free, my second “Maxwell for free” experience, third of my John Maxwell collection.

God Loves Surprises

Life is full of surprises. You’ll never know whom God will use to pour in His blessings in your life. It may be the one sitting beside you on a bus ride or the one leaning very hard at your back on a MRT ride. The challenge is how you would let God use you as a blessing to other. Go out and be a blessing to other and be blessed!

Look With the Heart

“People judge others by what they look like, but I judge people by what is in their hearts.” – 1 Samuel 16:7, CEV.

Last February 14 this year I ran my first 5-km. run at Luneta. “Run for the Heart” was sponsored by the Filipino-Chinese business community as part of their celebration of the Chinese New Year.

He's Overweight, And He Overtook Me

During that run, I have got to see a lot of different people. Since it’s only a fun run and not a serious marathon, not all participants are really athlete or physically fit to be called an athlete. Just like me. I’m just there to run and to have fun (well from the event itself, “fun-run”). On the 3-km U-turn sign, a large-built man, having a belly of a 5-months pregnant woman (I’m exaggerating), stands at about 5 feet 10 inches and maybe close to weigh 300 pounds overtook me.

I let him pass. I’m not there to compete to anyone anyway.

I finished my first 5-km run at 34 minutes and ranked 307th among all the 5-km runners.

Just like me, most people judge others by what they see outside. They criticize and mock others as if they are perfect and with no defect. They can easily say “He’s overweight he can’t run any 21-km marathon”. “He’s not an accounting graduate he can’t do any bookkeeping.” and so on.

But God is different. He never looked on the outside but rather on the inside. God always looks what’s in a man’s heart; his motive; his inner self.

The Boy Will Soon Be The King

Samuel commits the same mistake when God commission him to bless the next king. At first sight he was sure it was Eliab who will be the next king (1 Samuel 16:6) but he was wrong.

Among all of Jesse’ sons, David who is the youngest of them all, who was just a little kid taking care of his father’s sheep at that time but later on will have all the courage and determination to stand for the Lord to face Goliath in a duel is God’s chosen one.

Our motives are important to God. We may see ourselves ready and prepared for a much bigger challenge, a much bigger responsibility. Or maybe we may think we have grown smart and we can outsmart others. But God will then examine your motives, look at you in the heart and will never put you on ground where you cannot stand.

“We humans make plans, but the Lord has the final word. We may think we know what is right, but the Lord is the judge of our motives.” Proverbs 16:1-2, CEV.

Quit judging. You are no good to anyone.
